The Mid-Columbia Houseless Collaborative will host a free screening of the documentary film No Place To Grow Old, examining older adults aging into houselessness, Thursday evening at 6:30 in the Granada Theatre in The Dalles. Sarah Kellems of Mid-Columbia Community Action says while the documentary is based on experiences in Portland, the problem is in this area as well. And Kellems notes it’s not just housing, but also food banks seeing an increase in the numbers of seniors at their locations. Thursday evening’s showing will include a free dinner for the first 150 attendees, a moderated discussion with members of the Houseless Collaborative, and the film screening. Donations of shelf-stable food items for The Annex will be accepted at the door. The Mid-Columbia Houseless Collaborative is a partnership bringing together 40 local organizations dedicated to addressing houselessness across Hood River, Wasco, Sherman, Klickitat, and Skamania counties.

Nisei Highway Marker To Be Dedicated On Veterans Day
Dedication of the Oregon Nisei Veterans Historical Marker on Highway 35 will take place on Veterans Day next Tuesday. Highway 35 from Hood River to Government Camp was designated as the Oregon Nisei Veterans World War II Memorial Highway in 2022, and this marker will be the completion of the project. It includes six images that features stories and family connections. The American Legion Post 22 Veterans Day ceremony at River of Life Assembly Church on Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. will include remarks on the marker, and registration for that event is full, but it will be live streamed and can be viewed at Anderson Tribute Center or on its Facebook page. The onsite public unveiling of the marker will take place on Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. on Highway 35 at the first viewpoint area where the Nisei Veterans Highway sign is located.
Skamania & Klickitat County Voters With Offices & Issues To Settle
Votes in Skamania and Klickitat counties have a number of offices and issues to decide. Ballots must be postmarked or placed in official drop boxes by the end of Tuesday. There are three contested races for positions in Bingen…including Kelsey Ramsey and Clinton Deo running for Mayor, Eric Schroder and Maya Deo seeking City Council Position 4, and Erika Almskaar and Quinton Deo the candidates for Council Position 5. Jessica Smith and Erin Hartford are running for Lyle School Board Position 2. Also on the Klickitat County ballot are a one-tenth-of-one-percent public safety tax in Goldendale, and a proposed annexation of the Trout Lake School District area into the White Salmon Valley Pool Metropolitan Park District.
Moving to Skamania County…Jenny Collins Taylor and Scott Anderson are the mayoral candidates in Stevenson, Tina Van Pelt and Xochil Springer are running for Position 1 on the Stevenson City Council, and Erin Thomas Minnis and Jeff Breckel are seeking Position 2. There is also a contested race for Skamania County Hospital District Board Position 3 between Addison Dillon and Angie Hollis. Also, the Skamania County Cemetery District is seeking a property tax levy lid lift for maintenance and upkeep costs for the first time in 50 years, asking to move to .1037 per $1,000 of assessed value.
Federal Street Water Main Upgrade Enters Phase 2
Phase 2 of the water main upgrade on Federal Street between East 1st and East 2nd in The Dalles is underway. There will be a full street closure in place on Federal between East 1st and the alleyway between 1st and 2nd until November 19. Motor vehicles and bicyclists are being detoured to adjacent side streets. Parking lots on East 1st remain open and accessible by alternate routes, while pedestrian and sidewalk access remain open. Work hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on each scheduled work day. The street will remain closed throughout the night and on the weekends.
The Dalles WWTP Discharge Back In Compliance
The discharge to the Columbia River from the City of The Dalles Wastewater Treatment Plant returned to compliance with permit limits for E. coli as of Friday evening. The average of five samples taken throughout the day on Thursday at the City discharge point to the river were within limits. The delay in reading out the test results was due to the 24-hour incubation time that the test requires. Recent Columbia River samples show that E. coli levels at the sample locations were well below bacterial criteria set by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality for freshwater recreation. Signs placed at locations of public river access on the Oregon shore of the Columbia River to warn of contaminated water have been taken down. City Of The Dalles Holds Briefing On Construction Projects
The City of The Dalles held a public briefing Thursday evening on three different projects that will lead to street closures and other impacts over the next couple of years. Most notable was the long-discussed First Street project to replace deteriorated roadway, walls and sidewalks. It will run from this winter into spring of 2027 and will require adjustments to allow public parking in that area to remain available with First Street being closed from Union to Laughlin. The Federal Street Plaza and the second phase of the upsizing of the main sewer trunk of the west side of The Dalles were also discussed. Details on the projects are available at thedalles.org.
The Dalles Wastewater Effluent Exceeds Plant Limit For E. Coli
The Dalles Public Works Department says tests on Tuesday showed discharged effluent exceeds the municipal wastewater treatment plant’s limit for E. coli due to incomplete disinfection. In a statement this morning, Public Works says several resamples over the following 24 hours confirmed the treatment process is not under control. City officials say the cause of the exceedance is unknown. The ultraviolet disinfection process has been ramped up to maximum capacity in an attempt to compensate for partially treated effluent. The frequency of sampling has been increased until E. coli counts are back within permit limits, and they will also be taken at locations in the Columbia River to determine the effect on water quality in the river. Signs have been placed at locations of public river access on the Oregon shore of the Columbia River, from The Dalles Riverfront Park to West Mayer Park boat launch saying “Warning – Contaminated Water – No water contact” and give phone numbers to call for information. The Department is communicating with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and local health department officials to coordinate response. Hood River County To Hold Forest Management Open House
The Hood River County Commission will hold an open house on Monday on the County’s Forest Management Plan. Several exhibits will be available to review the plan update process, including Forest Advisory Committee and Recreational Trail Advisory Committee membership, forest inputs and values, a map of the county forest, and an opportunity to comment on the current Forest Management Plan policy. The open house will be from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at the Hood River Fire Station, with a work session and staff presentation to follow at 5 p.m., and public comment from 5:15 to 5:45. The County’s current five-year strategic plan that runs through the end of next year contains a goal to adapt the Forest Management Plan to meet current and future needs.

Hood River Valley 48, Parkrose 6: Bodie Stuben threw for three touchdown passes, Talon Britt caught two of them, and Bam Layna ran for a pair of scores as the Eagles finished off an 8-1 regular season, and nailed down a share of the District 1 title. HRV will learn its state Class 5A playoff pairing after games are played tonight.

Hood River Valley’s Syl Perrin won the girls’ race at the Northwest Oregon Conference Championships at Blue Lake Park in Fairview. Perrin ran the course in a time of 18:57.42, to win by over 31 seconds. Teammate Savina Davis took second, as the pair led HRV to a third place finish in the team standings. Perrin and Davis both advance to state Class 5A meet next Saturday in Eugene. In the boys’ race, HRV’s Sam Knoll qualified for state by finishing fourth. The Eagle boys also earned a third place finish. There is a chance that both HRV teams could qualify for state as a wildcard entry. Those will be determined by a committee.
Kathryn O’Connor and Lilah Zimmerman led Columbia to a second place finish behind LaCenter in the girls’ portion of the Trico League Championships at Vancouver Lake. O’Connor was third and Zimmerman fourth for CHS. Stevenson took fourth in the team standings, paced by an eighth place finish by Daisy Jones. In the boys’ standings, Columbia was fourth and Stevenson eighth. Brayden Hays of Stevenson took ninth, while Ethan Hayes topped CHS in thirteenth.
