The new home of the Hood River Warming Shelter will be on display during an open house and auction fundraiser this Saturday.  After bouncing from a number of different locations in previous years, the shelter that provides a warm place to sleep at night for those who are homeless will be located this year in the former “Fruit Tree” building on Frontage Road.  Saturday’s event will include food, live music, and a silent auction.  It will run from seven to nine in the evening at the new shelter location.

Oregon Class 5-A Girls Soccer Tournament First Round Hood River Valley 1, Ashland 0 (penalty kicks):  After 100 minutes of scoreless play, Hood River Valley won the penalty kick shootout 4-3 to advance in the state tournament.  Ashland actually led the shootout 3-2, but HRV goalkeeper Vanessa Silva made back to back saves, while Jenissa Ramirez and YaYa Chavarria convered to give the Eagles the win.  HRV advances to meet top seed and three-time defending champion Summit on Saturday in Bend.   Thursday Schedule Oregon Class 5-A High School Water Polo Tournament at Corvallis First Round Boys Hood River Valley vs. Madras, 1:40 p.m.   Girls Hood River Valley vs. Bend, 6:20 p.m.

Mid-Columbia Community Action is taking applications from eligible seniors and people with disabilities in Wasco, Hood River, and Sherman counties for this winter’s Low Income Energy Assistance Program.  Community Action Executive Director Jim Slusher says they recently sent out letters informing those eligible that sign ups have begun, and they are still taking appointments to continue that process.  Application appointments for the general public will not be taken until December 1.  For more information call Community Action in The Dalles at 541-298-5131 or in Hood River at 541-386-4027.

Fire severely damaged a home on 8th and Liberty in The Dalles on Tuesday night.  Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue Chief Bob Palmer says the single story family dwelling was 50 percent involved in the fire when crews arrived just after 8:20 p.m.  He says investigators found the family had just finished using a small table top grill to cook dinner, and afterwards some burning fat apparently dripped off and got on to some combustibles which caught fire, and then the small propane bottle attached to the grill blew up, fueling the fire even further.  The family got out of the home safely.  Dallesport fire crews assisted MCFR firefighters in responding to the situation.

Port of Hood River Commissioners received an update on the investigation into the damage caused by the apparent striking of the lift span pier on the Hood River-White Salmon Bridge sometime in early October.  Port Executive Director Michael McElwee says engineers are currently analyzing data from inspections last week to determine if the lift towers are out of alignment.  Next week climbers will do hands-on inspections of the lift span and tower steel.  Investigators believe the impact likely happened at night between September 30 and October 11, and anyone who may have felt a shake on the bridge or saw something unusual on the water during that time period is asked to call the Port of Hood River.

Oregon Class 5-A Boys Soccer Tournament First Round Hood River Valley 1, Silverton 0:  Noe Magana scored the game’s only goal in the 39^th minute to advance the defending state champions into the quarter-final round.  The Eagles had the run of play for most of the game, but could not finish a number of chances.  HRV will host Bend on Saturday in the quarters.  Bend was a 3-0 winner over Putnam yesterday, and were the Intermountain Conference champions.   SCAC Volleyball Tournament First Round Columbia (Burbank) def. The U.S. House Tuesday passed a bipartisan proposal offered by Oregon Congressmen Greg Walden and Earl Blumenauer and Washington Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler to make transportation projects in national scenic areas eligible for federal grants.  In a floor speech in support of the amendment attached to a long-term transportation bill, Walden said the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area has a strong need for regional transportation planning and improvement to major transportation elements, particularly the Hood River Interstate Bridge and the Bridge of the Gods in Cascade Locks.  Herrera Beutler added that when the Bridge of the Gods had to undergo repairs in 2013, one of the largest employers in Skamania County had to relocate part of their operations just to transport their goods across the river, and the safety of residents was impacted because large emergency vehicles could not cross the bridge.

The Dalles Planning Department has approved construction of a new data storage warehouse for Google in the Columbia Gorge Industrial Center.  The application submitted by Design LLC for the four-story building with parking and accessory buildings received administrative approval.  There were 14 conditions placed on the approval, including requirements to submit landscaping and lighting plans.  There is a ten-day appeal period on the decision.  During the summer, Google negotiated an enterprise zone tax abatement agreement with both the City and Wasco County for its third data storage facility in The Dalles.
