Some Ice Fountain Customers Under Boil Order

Some Ice Fountain Water District customers in the Barrett Drive and Country Club Road area are under a boil water order after a fire hydrant was hit on Alameda Road, causing those customers to lose water pressure for a time.  District Manager Mark Beam says all of those affected have had their service restored, but under state law the boil order has to be issued.  He says those who experienced a loss of water pressure should boil their water before consuming it.  Beam adds the order will remain in effect until results of tests for the water in that area are received, and that should happen on Wednesday.  Those with questions should call the Ice Fountain Water District at 541-386-4299.

Hanel Site Fill Collection Nearly Complete

Work to collect fill material from the log pond at the Lower Hanel Mill site is nearly complete.  Port of Hood River Executive Director Michael McElwee says the material was being moved to the Ken Jernstedt Airfield and distributed over much of the east end of the airport, and the ground it had been on has been leveled.  That sets the stage for marketing of the property.  McElwee notes the Port has a memorandum of understanding to sell a lot on the Lower Hanel Mill property to Neal Creek Forest Products, and is optimistic the rest of the land fairly soon thereafter will be developed.  The property is 12-and-a-half acres in size.

Mosbrucker Reintroducing School Bus Seatbelt Bill

Washington 14th District Representative Gina Mosbrucker has once again introduced a bill that would require school buses in Washington to be equipped with seatbelts.  It’s the third year in a row she has introduced such a bill, and the Goldendale Republican is optimistic the measure will pass the Legislature this year.  The primary sticking point has been coming up with funding to equip school buses, but Mosbrucker says she’s found a way to get the money without affecting local school districts or the state budget by using fines from drivers disobeying bus paddles.  Mosbrucker says revenue from the fines would be more than enough to pay for school bus seatbelts and provide additional funds for police to enforce the stop paddle law in local school districts.  The bill will be heard in the House Education Committee.

Good Holiday For TD Retail, But January A Challenge

Downtown The Dalles merchants have reported a good holiday season, but it’s been a fairly slow January.  The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Lisa Farquharson says her organization pushed a “shop local” campaign during the holidays, and will be trying to continue that in the first month of the year.  Farquharson says they will be looking at simple campaigns for the winter, including helping businesses to package specials to encourage foot traffic into stores.  Farquharson adds business traditionally begins to pick back up during the spring vacation period when tourist traffic increases.

Wasco County Approves IGA Contingent On Legal Review

Wasco County Commissioners have voted to proceed with an intergovernmental agreement with Columbia Gorge Community College and the City of The Dalles to use three-point-five million dollars in enterprise zone funds from the third Google project to help CGCC build the Treaty Oak Skills Center.  The CGCC board last week voted to proceed with a seven-point-six million dollar bond sale on the project pending signing of the IGA.  County Commissioners approved the IGA contingent on legal review of some non-substantive elements of the agreement, but Commissioner Scott Hege said he didn’t want legal technicalities to prevent the project from moving forward.  The College has a seven-point-three million dollar grant from the state for the project, and has committed $3.8 million to construct college housing toward the required match that would be completed with the enterprise zone funds, but the state requires those monies to be in the bank by February 11, and for that to happen the bond sale needs to proceed by January 28.  CGCC President Marta Year-Cronin says the skills center and housing provides new opportunities for school, giving it the chance to become a destination to bring people in to train for local industry and to offer programs the school does not currently have facilities for.

URA Approves Deals For Recreation & Blue Buildings

The Columbia Gateway Urban Renewal Agency approved purchase agreements for the Recreation and Blue Buildings in downtown The Dalles, moving both buildings a step closer to renovations.  After coming out of an executive session, the URA board voted to approve a purchase agreement and authorized execution of a Disposition and Development Agreement with Todd Carpenter and Carla McQuade for the redevelopment of the Recreation Building.  Moments later, the board then approved a separate purchase agreement by another buyer of the Blue Building, and authorized proceeding with a draft of a Dispostion and Development Agreement.  In another action, the URA board voted to enter into an exclusive negotiating agreement with Hanlon Development Company for a public-private partnership to redevelop the former Griffith Motors property on 542 East Third for a mixed use residential/commercial development.

Arrests Lead Officers To Find Stolen Property

The arrest of two men over the weekend in The Dalles led to the seizing of suspected stolen property in Dallesport.  According to The Dalles Police Department, some of the recovered property has been linked to burglaries in White Salmon and The Dalles, and included numerous chain saws, pole saws, power tools, a concrete saw, an auger, and firearms.  Anyone who might have information on these or any other burglaries are encouraged to call The Dalles Police Department at 541-296-2613.  Two 24-year-old men, Christopher Schwarzbach and Juan Medina, were taken into custody in the arrest and were lodged at NORCOR.  Bingen/White Salmon Police and the Klickitat and Hood River County Sheriff’s Offices are assisting in the investigation.
