As spring gets underway, forest owners are watching to see if winter cold will help reduce an outbreak of bark beetles in the region. OSU Extension Forester Glenn Ahrens says that is unlikely. Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir trees have been hit hard by the beetles, specifically the California five-spined ips beetle. Ahrens says the main goal as always is to maintain healthy forests, and during a beetle outbreak cleaning up dead trees is important. Ahrens notes along with removing the dead tree, removal of the beetles that are in the tree is important to help prevent their spread.
