A subcommittee chaired by Oregon Second District Congressman Greg Walden held a hearing on ensuring the security, stability, and freedom of the global Internet. Walden and other members of the panel sought answers regarding the Obama administration’s proposal instructing the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers to explore ways to remove the United States from its oversight role of the Domain Name System. The Hood River Republican is concerned such a move would leave the Internet vulnerable to restrictions by authoritarian governments. Last year the House unanimously passed legislation written by Walden affirming the policy of the United States regarding Internet governance and preserves Internet freedom. It’s currently pending in the Senate.
