An engineer’s investigation indicates the Port of Hood River Interstate Bridge lift span can be put back in operation in about four to five months. Port Commissioners heard a report on the latest findings involving a potential allision in late September, where it is believed a vessel made contact with and damaged the northern pier of the lift span. Port Executive Director Michael McElwee says not all of the necessary repairs are a result of the allision, but some are. The engineer’s investigation found the northern tower of the lift span is not plumb by two inches to the west and one-and-a-half inches to the north, and McElwee says that will have to be monitored to determine if that is happening over time or if it was caused by the allision. Cost of repairs is estimated at $200,000. An investigation into the how the allision occurred is continuing.
