Hood River County appears that it will be putting renewal of the public safety local option levy on the November general election ballot. County Administrator Allison Williams says they will be putting an official action on the Commission’s agenda for their regular Monday meeting. Commission Chair Jennifer Euwer explains they want to do it in November to give themselves a second opportunity in May, before it would impact the County budget. The levy was first approved by voters in 2020.

The Dalles’ boys finished fourth and girls’ sixth at the Sandy Invitational. Julian Morehouse won the boys’ pole vault, and the Riverhawk girls won the four by 800 meter relay.
South Wasco’s Joey Holloway was second in the boys’ javelin and the Redsides’ Macy Bell was second in the girls’ high jump at the Buck Classic in Pendleton.
Sherman’s Michael Blagg, Renan Christiansen, Henry Poirier, Taylor Payne, and Sophie Hulke all won events at a meet in Prairie City along with the Huskies’ girls four by 400 meter relay team.
Second place finishes by Melody Stock, Violette Anderson, and Jade McLean led Trout Lake to finish fifth in the team standings at the Estacada Small School Invitiational.
Goldendale’s Raymond Holycross won the boys’ triple jump and 300 meter hurdles while teammate Matthew Gray was first in the long jump.
Motorcyclist Injured After Highway 141 Accident
A motorcyclist was injured and taken to a hospital after hitting a deer on Sunday evening in western Klickitat County. According to the Washington State Patrol, 21-year-old Lusio Cervantes Huerta was traveling south on Highway 141 at milepost 3.6 at around 6:20 Sunday evening when he passed a vehicle in a no-passing zone. When he merged back into southbound lane, he hit the deer. Cervantes Huerta was ejected from the motorcycle, coming to rest along with his bike on the southbound shoulder. He was wearing a helmet. The WSP says Cervantes Huerta was taken to Skyline Hospital with undisclosed injuries.
Hikers Lost On Pacific Crest Trail Found By Rescuers
A pair of teenage hikers who became lost on the Pacific Crest Trail late last week were found by rescuers in Skamania County. The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office says emergency dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call Thursday night from 19-year-old Wyatt Corn in which he said he and his 19-year-old friend were lost on the trail just north of North Bonneville after hiking to Aldrich Butte earlier in the day. Skamania County Search and Rescue responded to the area, and after three hours were able to find the two lost hikers and bring them to safety. The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office is reminding all outdoor recreationists to be prepared for their outing, including possessing the Ten Essentials, letting someone know about your trip plans, and ensuring your adventure is within your skill levels.
Tualatin Man Dies In Fatal Fall Near Prindle
A Tualatin man died after a fall on the shore of the Columbia River. The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office says its communications center on Wednesday received a report of a man who fell about 20 feet onto rocks along the river near Prindle. Skamania County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene, and determined the man, identified as Francisco Javier Duran of Tualatin, succumbed to injuries sustained in the fall and was pronounced deceased. After an investigation was completed, it was determined no criminal actions were responsible for the incident.
Newton Forum Rescheduled
The Hood River County School District says they will hold a community forum with Bill Newton, the district’s current interim superintendent that is seeking the full-time job, on Thursday. Newton could not attend a forum this past Thursday that also involved the other finalist for the job, Bellingham middle school principal Meagan Dawson, due to a death in his family. The forum with Newton will take place this Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at the Hood River Middle School Auditorium. Newton will answer questions that have been submitted by the community and selected by the district board involving budget development, closing the opportunity gap, and supporting mental health. A community meet-and-greet will follow.
HRPD Receives DUII Enforcement Award
The Hood River Police Department was recognized as the 2023 DUII Law Enforcement Agency of the Year at the Oregon Multi-Disciplinary Task Force Conference. The Hood River County District Attorney’s Office nominated the department for the award. In their nomination letter, the D.A.’s office highlighted the quality of work HRPD officers perform, citing their diligence, thoroughness, and excellence in their DUII investigations. In addition, HRPD Sergeant Emelike Delancy was recognized as Oregon’s 2023 Drug Recognition Expert of the Year, following up on being named Oregon’s 2021 DUII Officer of the Year.

Chinook Season Downstream Of Bonneville Dam Extended To Tuesday
Fishery managers from Oregon and Washington added four additional days, from Saturday through Tuesday, of recreational spring Chinook salmon fishing in the mainstem Columbia River downstream of Bonneville Dam. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says through last Sunday, April 2, there have been about 23,500 angler trips, resulting in a harvest of approximately 1,000 adult spring Chinook, only about 14 percent of the upriver spring Chinook allocation available to it prior to an in-season run size update. ODFW staff believe that could go up to 40 percent of its pre-update upriver spring Chinook allocation by today, when the fishery was originally scheduled to close, leaving room to add more days and remain confident that the fishery will be well within its conservation limits. The season upstream of Bonneville Dam, from the Tower Island power lines upstream to the Oregon/Washington border, started Monday and is scheduled to continue through Thursday, May 2.
