The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department is working with federal agencies and tribal partners to restore and protect a portion of Mayer State Park. The department is working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Bonneville Power Administration, and tribes to spread soil and plant native grasses to stabilize the east side of Mayer State Park. The work also includes adding boulders. Visitors can still access the Columbia River for watersports and recreation at Mayer State Park, but the east riverbank area is closed to foot and vehicle traffic. In addition to restoration, the work includes improving river access in the remaining portion of the park with an improved pathway to the water. The park will remain open to all users during and after restoration efforts.

Salmon & Steelhead Fishing On Mainstem Columbia Closing Monday Night
Fishery managers from Oregon and Washington took action to close salmon and steelhead fishing in the mainstem Columbia River upstream of Bonneville Dam as the spring Chinook allocation for this fishery has been met. Salmon and steelhead angling and retention will close between Bonneville Dam and the Oregon/Washington state line upstream of McNary Dam at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, April 29. This area was originally scheduled to be open through May 2. Columbia River program manager Tucker Jones says the need to close early is unfortunate but necessary as the fishing has been better that expected, and has met its allocation. Jones adds this area and the fishery below Bonneville Dam may reopen later in spring, depending on the run size and available allocations when managers reassess in the first few weeks of May. All other permanent regulations remain in effect.

Newton Tells HR School Board RIF’s Avoided For Classified & Licensed Staff
Hood River County School District Superintendent Bill Newton told the district board that they are able to avoid a reduction in force for classified and licensed staff for the 2024-25 school year. Newton told the board during his regular update at Wednesday’s meeting that the 2024-25 budget remains fluid as the district budget committee gets ready to meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Hood River Valley High School library. Newton had indicated last week that attrition would allow them to adjust staff size, but some transferring of personnel could occur. In other business, Newton said interim Hood River Valley High School athletic director Sean Mailey had been hired for the permanent position, and interviews were taking place this week for principal positions at Hood River Options Academy and May Street Elementary School.
CGCC Considers Renewing Bond This Fall
Columbia Gorge Community College is considering going out to renew its bond later this year. New CGCC President Dr. Kenneth Lawson says they are currently working on a package with the intent of putting it on the November ballot. Lawson adds they don’t want to change tax rates, and projects would primarily be maintenance on current facilities. Lawson noted they will be doing some polling work in the next few weeks to determine what will be feasible and supported by the residents of the college district.
