HR School Board Gets General Budget Outline
Hood River County School District Superintendent Dan Goldman gave an outline of proposed budget cuts to the district board in preparation for the presentation of a complete budget in May. The slightly over one million dollars in reductions were not specific, but include a reduction of one full-time teacher at the elementary school level, one-and-three-quarters licensed positions at middle schools, and two teachers at Hood River Valley High School, along with about 40 hours worth of positions from classified and other staff, plus $142,000 in savings from previously announced transportation changes. Board member Mark Johnson says the outline shows what they have to do to rebuild nearly depleted reserves. Johnson, who is also a state legislator, thinks with growth in support for the state school fund the district can come off this budget to begin to move forward while stabilizing the district’s budget. The first budget committee meeting is set for May 6.
Walden Talks With Hospital Officials About 96 Hour Rule
Oregon Second District Congressman Greg Walden met with Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital officials to hear their concerns surrounding a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services rule requiring physicians at critical access hospitals like Providence Hood River to certify at the time of admission that Medicare and Medicaid patients will not be at the hospital for more than 96 hours.
