Parkdale Man Arrested And Charged In Stabbing

A 38-year-old Parkdale man was arrested by the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office and charged in the stabbing of his brother.  The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office says Leif Andrew Sorensen was arrested and lodged at NORCOR on charges of first degree assault and attempted murder.  The Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to the 5600 block of Trout Creek Ridge Road after receiving a 9-1-1 call from 35-year-old Hans Severinsen, who reported being stabbed in the chest by his brother.  Sorensen was located about one mile away and taken into custody without incident.  The Sheriff’s Office says Severinsen was transported by LifeFlight to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, where is listed in critical condition.  Sorensen made an initial court appearance in Hood River County Circuit Court on Monday morning, with bail set at $100,000 and another court appearance scheduled for November 19.

D21 To Hold Meetings On Superintendent Search

The consultants hired by North Wasco County School District 21 to conduct the search process for a new superintendent will hold a pair of community meetings over the next two weeks to take input on the qualities people would like to see in whoever gets the job.  The firm McPherson & Jacobson will hold meetings Wednesday in The Dalles Middle School commons and November 13 at Mid-Columbia Senior Center, with both running from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.  The meetings are open to anyone wishing to provide input.  In addition, an online survey in both English and Spanish is available until November 18.  Link to it at nwasco.k12.or.us.

Burns Planned In Barlow District

Fire management personnel will be conducting prescribed burns this week on the Barlow Ranger District of the Mt. Hood National Forest.  Planned burn locations include the Shamrock 1 burn on 180 acres north of Forest Service Road 44, and the Star 3 burn on 103 acres north of Camp Baldwin off Forest Service Road 4440.  Residents living on the east side of Mt. Hood can expect to see smoke for a few days following ignition.   Prescribed burning operations are planned to begin on Wednesday, but operations could take place any time during the next two weeks, depending on conditions.  A portion of the Eightmile Campground Interpretive Trail will be closed for approximately two to three days while the Shamrock Prescribed Fire is being conducted.  Crews will post signs in the area prior to ignition.  Visitors in the vicinity of Eightmile and Lower Eightmile Campgrounds should expect to see smoke, firefighting personnel, and equipment in the area.  Those campgrounds are currently closed for the season.

OCH Launches Scholarship Program

One Community Health is launching a new scholarship program for local Oregon high school students.  In a partnership with the Oregon State Treasury’s Oregon Savings Network, students at local Oregon high schools can submit their artwork to compete for $6,000 in scholarship funds.  One Community Health recently received a $3,000 award from the Central Oregon Independent Practice Association intended to be spent on artwork that reflects a mission to advance health and social justice in the community, and the Oregon Savings Network matched that amount.  Winning artwork will be displayed at One Community Health’s clinic in The Dalles and new clinic to open in Hood River in mid-2020.  Submissions are due on March 20, 2020, and can be dropped off at any One Community Health clinic location or submitted online.  For more information, go to OneCommunityHealth.org.

Counties Get Grant To Build Relationships For Health

Hood River and Wasco counties have received a grant from the Oregon Health Authority to put towards sustainable relationships for community health.  Jane Palmer is involved in administering the grant, saying the goal is to help make healthy choices easier, and support patients as they come into clinics and encourage them to do some of the preventive health activities that will save lives.  The grant brought $195,000 into the Columbia Gorge area, and many different health care agencies are involved in the effort.

The Hood River County Chamber of Commerce is taking entries now for the Holiday Parade on December 6 in downtown Hood River.  The Chamber’s Hannah Settje says this year they will not be taking parade entries the day of the event, but they will take entries from now until December 3.  Cost to enter the parade is $10 for non-profits and $20 for businesses, which supports the organization and implementation of the event.  Entry forms are available at hoodriver.org.

Senate Approves Bill With Gorge Economic Development Funds

The U.S. Senate on Thursday approved an Agriculture Appropriations Bill that includes monies for economic development in the Gorge.  The offices of Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden say the bill includes $2 million to help Columbia River Gorge communities promote economic development through the Oregon and Washington Investment Boards, rounding out a $10 million commitment that was authorized when the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area was created.   Many in area governmental agencies have clamored for those funds for years.  The bill also includes language directing the Secretary of Agriculture to prioritize National Scenic Areas that were devastated by wildfires, including the Eagle Creek area in the Columbia River Gorge.  The bill now goes to the House.

Body Of Missing Mushroom Picker Found

The body of a 78-year-old Beaverton man who was reported missing on October 19 after not returning from mushroom picking north of Carson was found.  The Skamania County Sheriff”s Office says a member of a hunting party was told by a man who stopped at their camp that he had found a body just off the Forest Service 60 Road.  After one of the hunters called the Sheriff’s office, Klickitat County officers brought back the man who found the body, who then directed deputies to the deceased’s location, which was about six-tenths of a mile down the USFS 6052 Road and 250 yards into the woods.  Officers identified the body as that of Richard Sugai.  Skamania County Undersheriff Pat Bond indicated an autopsy will be conducted.
