The Dalles City Council voted to file a public nuisance action in Wasco County Circuit Court against St. Vincent dePaul Society of The Dalles. Councilors took the action after an executive session, but did not elaborate on the reasons why other than Councilor Dan Richardson saying while seconding Tim McGlothlin’s motion that the move was to “remedy on-going quality of life impacts and public disorder.” The move came after a large number of business and residential neighbors of the St. Vincent dePaul Community Meals location on West 3rd testified to councilors that something needed to be done about problems surrounding the facility ranging from public defecation and drug use to vandalism and more serious criminal activity. Mayor Rich Mays noted after those comments that court decisions have limited what they can do in regards to homeless issues, adding they have had talks with St. Vincent dePaul for a year. No one from St. Vincent dePaul spoke at the Council meeting.
