The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office has stopped its investigation into an alleged sexual assault on the Indian Creek Trail last week after an admission that the report was false. In a statement Tuesday afternoon, the Sheriff’s Office said the alleged victim in the case has admitted to investigators that the incident did not occur and the allegations were false. The person who made the report, a female juvenile student at Hood River Valley High School, had reported being sexually assaulted on the Indian Creek Trail near the school last Wednesday morning at around 10 a.m. The Sheriff’s Office statement said while this was an unfortunate situation, the fact remains sexual assault occurs at alarming rates around the country, and national statistics from multiple sources confirms that sexual assault is one of the most under reported crimes, with between 63 to 68 percent still being left unreported. In addition, false reports do happen are rare. Data collected from around the United States suggests that the prevalence of false reporting between two to ten percent.
