The Dalles Public Works crews feel they have located the pipe in Wright Street that has been dumping high levels of E. Coli into Mill Creek, but they still have not found its source. Steve Byers of Public Works says they are going to do more dye testing to try to find where the contamination is coming from, but adds they will probably have to more digging at some point. He said the pipe is heading up Wright Street to the south. There has been a theory the pipe could have been installed in the 1950’s to drain a natural spring to stabilize the hillside and allow homes to be built on it, and a failed septic drainfield is contaminating it. The water does contain a brightener used in laundry detergent.
