Fishery managers from Oregon and Washington took action to close salmon and steelhead fishing in the mainstem Columbia River upstream of Bonneville Dam as the spring Chinook allocation for this fishery has been met. Salmon and steelhead angling and retention will close between Bonneville Dam and the Oregon/Washington state line upstream of McNary Dam at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, April 29. This area was originally scheduled to be open through May 2. Columbia River program manager Tucker Jones says the need to close early is unfortunate but necessary as the fishing has been better that expected, and has met its allocation. Jones adds this area and the fishery below Bonneville Dam may reopen later in spring, depending on the run size and available allocations when managers reassess in the first few weeks of May. All other permanent regulations remain in effect.
