Portland Girl Drowns In Nichols Boat Basin

A ten-year-old girl from Portland drowned after falling out of a raft in Hood River’s Nichols Boat Basin on Wednesday afternoon.  Hood River County Sheriff Matt English says the girl was riding in the raft at about 2 p.m. with another family acquaintance.  She was not wearing a personal flotation device at the time.  A search was conducted by the Sheriff’s Office, Columbia River Intertribal Fisheries Enforcement, Oregon State Police, Hood River Police, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, local fire and EMS crews, and the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office.  The child’s body was recovered approximately three hours later in about ten feet of water by the Skamania County Dive Team.
