Fundraisers for the rebuild of Hood River’s Children’s Park continue to seek $35,000 more in community donations to be able to fully complete the proposed facility. The final donations would finance a Poured-In-Place, or PIP, surface, which allows for a softer, safer, more durable and accessible playing surface for the playground. If the budget goal is not met, an alternative ground surface would be a less expensive, less desirable chip surfacing that lacks many benefits offered by PIP, which is identified as the best option for Americans with Disabilities Act compliance, and also result in long-term cost savings with lower maintenance costs. The Children’s Park Rebuild is being financed with matching $150,000 contributions from the City of Hood River and Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District., with close to $100,000 in community donations already committed. Tax deductible donations can be made online at gofundme.com/childrenspark, or mailed to the Hood River Rotary Foundation at P.O. Box 1187, Hood River, OR 97031.
Architectural drawings for a proposed Gorge Youth Center will be unveiled at land dedication of its location on Saturday. ACTS International Executive Director Joe Martin says the plans incorporate areas for a café, indoor fieldhouse, running and walking track, computer lab, and auditorium. A capital campaign is underway, as the project will not use any tax-based funding, and a steering committee is in place to lead the effort. The property located behind Motel 6 and Coastal Farm and Ranch at Seventh and Myrtle Streets in The Dalles was donated. The land dedication will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to noon. A website has been established at gorgeyouthcenter.org.
The Dalles Public Works Department says discharge from the municipal wastewater treatment plant to the Columbia River has returned to compliance with permit limits for E. coli as of late Sunday afternoon. Samples taken on Saturday throughout the day at the City discharge point to the river were within limits for each individual sample and for an average of five samples. The delay in reading out the test results is due to the 24-hour incubation time that the test requires. Samples taken at pre-arranged locations in the river late Saturday were also within limits for each sample. Signs which were placed at locations of public river access on the Oregon shore of the Columbia River to warn of contaminated water have been taken down.

The Gifford Pinchot National Forest is conducting a forest-wide analysis of 210 developed recreation sites, including campgrounds, picnic sites, visitor information sites, trailheads, and cabin/lookout rentals. The analysis, information gathered from the public, and subsequent recommendations will result in changes to how some sites are managed, what types of changes might be possible, and what investment priorities will be in coming years. Social, financial, and environmental factors at each site were used to identify a site’s future sustainability. Initial results revealed over $1.7 million would be needed annually to adequately operate and maintain these sites at their current level, which results in a funding shortfall of over $700,000. In addition, backlog maintenance on these sites is over $10 million, far above Forest Service funding capacity. Additional developed recreation site information, and maps can be found at the Gifford Pinchot National Forest website.
North Wasco County School District 21 is pre-registering kindergarteners this week for the 2018-19 school year at all district elementary schools. Parents are asked to bring their child’s birth certificate, immunization records, vision and dental screening certification, and proof of physical address. But D-21 Superintendent Candy Armstrong says if parents don’t have all of those items, they should still come in to get the child registered, as there is plenty of time to get all the necessary paperwork pulled together. For more information contact the D-21 elementary school nearest you.
