Andy Codding has been named the new head football coach at The Dalles High School.  The school made the announcement on its athletics Facebook page.  It marks the return of the coach who oversaw the most recent successful period in the program’s history, leading the school to a Columbia River Conference championship in 2010 before moving on to Ridgeview, where he took that program to a state Class 4A championship.  Codding returned to the area last year, and was an assistant coach for the Riverhawks.  He takes over for Steve Sugg, who resigned from the position during the winter.

Fire Burns Market

Fire late Friday night destroyed a market just north of Parkdale.  Crews arrived at Jim’s Market on Dee Highway at about 10:45 p.m. on Friday night to find flames inside the building.  Parkdale Fire Chief Mike McCafferty says the first arriving engine found the fire had extended out the rear of the building.  Crews started a direct attack but found the fire had extended out the rear of the building, so they pulled back and protected fuel pumps, propane tanks, and adjacent buildings.  The fire did spread to a camp trailer and a small residential house.  McCafferty indicated the store, trailer, and house were a total loss. There were no injuries reported. Cause of the fire remains under investigation, and has been referred to the Oregon State  Fire Marshal’s office.  Crews from Westside, Wy’east, and Hood River fire departments joined Parkdale Fire personnel in responding to the blaze.

Bonham Says Cap & Trade Bill Doesn’t Do Enough To Lessen Rural Impact

Oregon 52nd District State Representative Daniel Bonham does not believe recent changes in the carbon cap-and-trade bill do enough to blunt the impact of such a program on rural portions of the state.  The Dalles Republican is on the Joint Committee on Carbon Reduction that is hashing through the controversial topic.  Committee co-chairs Senator Michael Dembrow and Representative Karin Power, both Democrats, say they’re proposing to invest a majority of the funds to rural and low-income communities and added a plan to refund any additional fuel costs to those making less than their area’s median income.  But Bonham says indirect costs passed down to residents remain his concern.  Bonham says Dembrow and Power are expected to give their rationale for the bill as it stands now during committee meetings today, and more amendments will be introduced.

CGCC And WorkSource Offer On-The-Job Training Program

Columbia Gorge Community College has partnered with WorkSource Oregon for an on-the-job training program to help businesses offset the cost of hiring and training new employees.  Teresa Cummings of CGCC says the federally funded program is fairly simple, and it’s easy for the employer to qualify.  Employers simply have contact WorkSource, then the agency handles the paperwork and set out the training plan.  One key component is the on-the-job training contract must be established prior to the first day of work.  For information on the program, contact WorkSource in The Dalles at 541-296-5435 or in Hood River at 541-386-6300.

Hood River Bridge Schedules Several April Closures

The Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Bridge will be closed to all vehicle traffic for several nights in April for replacement of the lift span motors.  The work requires a large crane lift of heavy equipment to the top of both lift span towers.  The bridge will be closed between the hours of 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. on the nights April 9, 10, 17, and 29th.  Related work will also require some intermittent daytime closures on certain dates in April.  On April 3 and 4 there will be intermittent daytime single lane closures from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with expected delays of 20 to 30 minutes and flaggers on the bridge directing traffic.  On April 25 and 26 there will be intermittent full bridge closures and span lifts from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with delays of 30 to 40 minutes, plus flaggers and lift span gates to control traffic.

Man Presumed Drowned In Pine Hollow Reservoir

Searchers have been unable to locate a man missing and presumed drowned in Wasco County’s Pine Hollow Reservoir.  The Wasco County Sheriff’s Office says two men flipped a canoe in the reservoir Sunday evening.  One made it to shore, but the second man identified as 22-year-old Christopher Berry did not.  Search crews used boats, sonar, dive teams, and air assets Sunday night and Monday to try to locate Berry, but he has not been located in part due to the large search area and poor visibility in the water.  The active search has been suspended, and the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office asks that anyone with information on Berry or locates him to call 541-296-5454.
