The Port of The Dalles has received a consultant’s report on whether the Port should get involved in developing some kind of food processing facility.  Port Executive Director Andrea Klaas says the report suggested a focus on building and leasing a purpose designed processing space.  Another recommendation was to partner with a non-profit agency to oversee and manage the space.  The report also said the Port should not get into development of a commercial or shared use kitchen, as other groups in the region are better suited to do that, and that there is not a need for a co-packing space.  Klaas says now that they have the report there will be research done on how much it would cost to build a processing building, and then they will look for private sector partners who might be interested.

 

There will be single lane closures of the Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Bridge Monday night.  That’s to allow for roadway asphalt repairs of the Oregon approach to the bridge.  The single-lane closures will be from 8 p.m. tonight until 2 a.m. Tuesday morning.  Flaggers will direct traffic around what will be a moving work zone, and bridge users should expect delays during that time.  For more information, contact the Port of Hood River by e-mail at porthr@gorge.net

The search is continuing Monday for a 74-year-old Vancouver woman who has not been seen since Saturday when she was picking mushrooms in Skamania County northwest of Stevenson.  According to the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office, a friend reported 74-year-old Jung VanAtta as overdue from hiking and picking mushrooms on property on Beacon Highlands Road in Skamania, about 15 miles northwest of Stevenson.  The Sheriff’s Office says VanAtta had never picked in the area and was not familiar with the property.  Searchers on Sunday used dog teams, three drones, and a helicopter to aid in the effort, and a reverse 9-1-1 alert was initiated to inform homeowners in the area.

Celilo Village will unveil its new high-speed wi-fi this weekend.  With a grant from Google and a partnership with the Dufur School District, all sixteen homes in the village, the Celilo Education Center, and the longhouse will have access to high speed internet for the first time.  That will enable students to complete school projects, families to pay bills online, residents to attain higher education and business owners to access global markets.  The wi-fi will be unveiled during a community celebration Saturday at the Celilo Education Center.  In addition to wi-fi access, this project enabled the development of a refreshed computer lab in the Celilo Education Center.  Celilo Village is home to nearly 100 Native Americans, including approximately 35 school-aged children that attend school in the Dufur School District.   The school district operates the Celilo Pre-School and the village’s Education Center.

 

 

 

At a press conference at Celilo Park Monday, two tribes called for removal of the Bonneville, The Dalles, and John Day dams.  On the occasion of “Indigenous Peoples Day,” Yakama and Lummi Nation officials urged the federal government to reject what they called “the offensive doctrine of Christian discovery” that they claim is used to “justify federal actions that impair the rights of Native nations.”  They say the dams were built on a false legal foundation without consent they believe is required under the Treaty of 1855.  The tribal officials also claim the dams decimated the Yakama Nation’s fisheries, traditional foods, and cultural sites.

Cross Country

The Dalles boys and the Hood River Valley girls won the team titles at the Champoeg Invitational.  In the boys’ race HRV’s Omar Quintana was the individual winner, but Friedrich Stelzer was second and Juan Diego Contreras third for the Riverhawks.  In the girls’ run Josephine Dickinson was third and Frances Dickinson fifth for HRV.  The Dalles girls finished fifth, led by Hanna Ziegenhagen in 13^th.

 

Open enrollment for Medicare begins Tuesday and lasts through December 7.  Beneficiaries are encouraged to compare their current plans with other plans on the market.  Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance Medicare program analyst Lisa Emerson says there are more than two dozen plans to sift through.  Oregonians can find assistance online at SHIBA.oregon.gov, or by calling 1-800-722-4134.   Emerson says the assistance program is always looking for volunteers.                 

The Wasco County Sheriff’s Office has identified the body found near Mosier last Saturday as that of 45-year-old Kael Sean Moran.  The Sheriff’s Office says Moran was a resident of Wasco County who had been reported as a missing person in September by The Dalles Police.  The Oregon State Police Crime Lab entered fingerprints into a database to make the identification.  An examination by the state medical examiner’s office did not reveal any evidence that Moran’s death was anything but accidental in nature.  Moran’s body was found last Saturday in a ravine on private property above Mosier by a family out for a walk.  Anyone with knowledge or information about Moran’s movements since August 2019 should contact the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office at 541-506-2580.

 

A “Community Vision for Downtown The Dalles” will be the focus of meetings of The Dalles City Council and the Columbia Gateway Urban Renewal Agency in the upcoming week.  The document was developed in a series of meetings involving downtown stakeholders, the public, and municipal officials.  It includes four vision statements encapsulating goals generated from input gathered at the meetings, along with graphics indicating downtown “improvement areas” and “opportunity sites.”  City Councilors and URA board members will be asked to review the vision statements.  The Council meets Monday at 5:30 p.m. and the URA board on Tuesday at 5:30, with both meetings at The Dalles City Hall.

The Port of Hood River says roadway asphalt repairs at the Oregon approach and bi-annual bridge deck maintenance welding will prompt several single-lane closures of the Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Bridge this month.  Bridge users should plan for delays or seek alternate routes from Monday at 8 p.m. to Tuesday at 2 a.m. for the asphalt work at the Oregon approach.  Welding crews will be on the bridge for maintenance of its deck the weeks of October 21 and October 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each weekday.  Flaggers will direct traffic around the work zones in all cases.  Port officials advise motorists to expect delays and drive slowly for worker safety.
