A fire in Sherman County on Wednesday night burned over 100 acres as firefighters battled it well into the early morning hours. The fire originated near Highway 97 four miles north of Moro between DeMoss Park and DeMoss Cemetery at about 7:30 Wednesday evening. It was pushed by strong east winds blowing 30 to 40 miles per hour, along with very dry conditions. Reports indicated the fire was nearing mop-up at around 1 a.m. Firefighters from Moro, Wasco, North Gilliam County, South Gilliam County, North Sherman, and South Sherman fire departments were joined by area farmers and ranchers in responding to the blaze. There was also a small grass fire Wednesday evening at the Hook in Hood River near the railroad tracks. It occurred around 6:40 p.m., and Hood River fire crews were able to quickly extinguish it.
Work continues at Sorosis Park in The Dalles, with a new irrigation system going in and the re-planting of grass in a number of lawn areas. Northern Wasco Parks and Recreation District Executive Director Scott Baker says the area visible from Scenic Drive will be improved when this phase of work takes place from mid-September to mid-October. Baker adds Crestline Construction is the contractor for the project. This phase is costing a little over a million dollars, with both the City of The Dalles and Wasco County contributing $400,000 apiece to the project.
The deadline to file for mayoral and city council elections in Oregon passed on Tuesday. In The Dalles, there are no contested races, with three current seat holders all filing for the November vote. Those are Mayor Rich Mays, and Council members Tim McGlothlin and Scott Randall. In Hood River, a former mayor is seeking to return to that position, as Paul Blackburn is the lone candidate to file for the seat and Kate McBride is not seeking re-election. Four people have filed for three City Council seats, with incumbent Tim Counihan joined by Pamela Martin, Grant Polson, and Doug Stepina. There will be a contested race for mayor in Cascade Locks…with Cathy Fallon and Butch Miller the candidates. And there are four Cascade Locks City Council candidates: Denise Emmerling-Baker, Pete Happy, Eric Keller, and Brenda Wood.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office says they are looking for a 30-year-old Portland man who went missing Friday from a family residence along the Washougal River. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Blake Strong’s orange floating device was found along the river, but he was not located. An initial investigation revealed Strong had sustained an injury the prior day while recreating in the area and had secreted his pack, containing camping equipment, along the riverbank. There was some indication he wanted to retrieve the pack after being released from the hospital. He is under the care of a physician and requires daily medication. A witness came forward and reported seeing Strong walking west, in the Washougal River, wearing a green pack on the day he was reported missing. He may have also been seen walking down the Washougal River Road in Clark County. Blake Strong is described as 5’10″ tall, weighing 170 lbs., with blue eyes, strawberry blonde hair, and a beard. He was last seen wearing large green backpack, light colored khaki shorts, black hat and hiking boots. He may also have a blue “puffy” style jacket or a bright blue zip up hoodie. Anyone with information as to his whereabouts is asked to contact the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office at 509-427-9490 or your local authorities.
