Bridge Replacement Doesn’t Receive Federal Grant In First Attempt

The first attempt by the Port of Hood River and Klickitat County at a $195 million federal transportation grant for replacement of the Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Bridge has not resulted in an award.  Incoming Port of Hood River Executive Director Kevin Greenwood says they learned late last week they would not receive monies in the first round of funding resulting from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.  But Greenwood notes their application is in the running for two other federal grants.  In addition, Greenwood says there will be another round of intermodal grants expected to become available this spring, and the bridge project will again make an application.

TD Chamber Seeks Votes For Music Grant

The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce is asking people to place a vote for The Dalles to receive a three-year $90,000 matching grant to help put on a free outdoor concert series the next three years in Lewis and Clark Festival Park.  The Levitt Foundation is offering the AMP grants to small and mid-sized cities.  Chamber CEO Lisa Farquharson says The Dalles has a chance to receive the grant, but needs to move up from its current 14th position in the voting.  To vote, go to Levitt.org by Wednesday at 5 p.m.  The Top 20 finalists will be selected through the online and text-to-vote public voting phase.  The Levitt Foundation will review the top proposals and select up to 10 Levitt AMP grant recipients, which will be announced on November 15.

Man Injured In Highway 97 Accident

A 24-year-old man from Medford was taken by LifeFlight to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a one-vehicle accident Sunday night on Highway 97 north of Goldendale.  According to the Washington State Patrol, the four-wheel drive vehicle operated by Juan Garcia Birrueta was southbound on Highway 97 at milepost 21 just before 9 p.m. on Sunday when the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve to the left.  The WSP says the vehicle went off an embankment and became airborne for about 100 feet before landing and rolling once.  Garcia Birrueta was the only person in the vehicle.  The WSP says he is being charged with driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.

The Dalles Offers Sidewalk Rehab Program

The City of the Dalles is again offering its 50/50 Sidewalk Rehabilitation Program to help property owners rehabilitate deteriorated sidewalks.  The City will pay for half of the costs and the property owner will pay for half of the costs of an approved project.  City code states it’s the responsibility of the property owners to maintain public sidewalks adjacent to their properties.  The 50/50 Sidewalk Rehabilitation Program will help provide some financial assistance to property owners to meet that responsibility.  The City will consider applications for the rehabilitation or replacement of existing sidewalks.  Projects for construction of new sidewalks are not eligible.  Applicants for this program must be the property owner.  Cost sharing is only available for sidewalks located within the city limit of The Dalles.  The City has budgeted $50,000 for the cost sharing program, which will first focus on applications for sidewalks located in residential areas.  For application information, go to thedalles.org.

Providence Nurses Stage Informational Picket

Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital frontline nurses are conducting a public informational picket about staffing levels, safety standards and community health Thursday afternoon.  The nurses—represented by the Oregon Nurses Association (ONA)—are being joined by statewide health care leaders, union allies and local community supporters.  Nurses at Providence Hood River have been working without a contract since March.  They want staffing issues addressed along with stronger patient safety standards, improvements to their health insurance and paid leave, and a compensation package the ONA claims is needed to recruit and retain frontline caregivers.  ONA represents more than 4,000 frontline nurses working in 10 Providence Health System facilities from Portland to Medford including nearly 150 nurses working at Providence Hood River.
