TD Council Learns Underground Utilities Downtown Would Be Costly

The Dalles City Council received a presentation on what it would take to place utilities in the downtown area underground, and learned it would take a lot of money.  The cost estimate was $48 million for a project that would take eight to ten years to complete.  Mayor Rich Mays says that’s prohibitive to do all at once, and it also would be a complex project that would be disruptive to the affected area.  Councilors decided to concentrate on other projects that were less costly and bring improvements to the community.  But undergrounding is possible as other projects are undertaken, and the work can be done as properties are redeveloped.

Election Officials Dealing With Misinformation

Dealing with misinformation about elections is becoming a common occurrence for local election officials.  Wasco County Clerk Lisa Gambee says the subjects that receive national publicity have tended to trickle down to the local level.  Wasco County recently had to debunk a rumor that only ballots acquired on Election Day would be counted.  Gambee emphasizes the ballot voters have been mailed is your official ballot, and sending it back in by mail with a postmark on or before Election Day or placing it in an official drop box before 8 p.m. Election Day will lead to that ballot being counted.  She adds anyone who has election questions can contact their county elections office.

Washington Delegation Asks President To Support Increased Hanford Funds

Washington Fourth District Congressman Dan Newhouse and the rest of the state’s delegation requested President Joe Biden urge his administration to support an increased budget for the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management to ensure the federal government can continue to meet its legal and moral obligation to cleanup operations at Hanford.  The lawmakers wrote that the funding is a top priority for the state of Washington, the communities surrounding the Hanford site, and regional Tribes.  The lawmakers’ letter noted this year marks the successful launch of the Tank Side Cesium Removal system, which is the first step in turning low-level waste into glass.  But they also said as design, engineering, and construction of the High-Level Waste Facility is added to the mission scope, it is imperative the Fiscal Year 2024 budget request reflects not only the necessary resources for a critical phase of Hanford cleanup operations, but also the need for continued adequate funding in the Richland Operations and Office of River Protection Environmental Management accounts for subsequent fiscal years.
