A late Tuesday night fire near the former rodeo grounds in The Dalles burned about three acres. Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue says the brush fire occurred in the vicinity of West 2nd Street. Crews from MCFR, Cascade Locks, Dallesport, Westside, and Mosier fire departments all took part in limiting the size of the fire. MCFR and Oregon Department of Forestry in The Dalles will be monitoring the fire area and clearing up hot spots over the next day or two.
Riverhawks Advance To 4A Softball Title Game

The Dalles 3, Scappoose 1: The Riverhawks made an early 3-0 lead stand up and advance to Saturday’s championship game. Jeilane Stewart’s lead off home run in the first inning gave The Dalles the lead. The Riverhawks then scored two runs in the third inning, on back to back doubles by Keilani Crichton-Tunai and Despina Seufaulemua and a single by Madalynn Sagapoulutele. Saige Casey homered in the fourth for Scappoose, and then the Riverhawks had to hold off threats in the next two innings. Scappoose had a runner thrown out at the plate on a double steal attempt in the fifth inning, and stranded runners at second and third in the sixth inning. Kennedy Abbas struck out five on the way to pitching a six-hitter. The Dalles will meet top-seed Henley, who nipped Pendleton 11-10 in the other semi-final, in the championship game on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Eugene.
Paving Work Set For 2nd Street In The Dalles Early Next Week
The Dalles Public Works says early next week a contractor will be doing asphalt maintenance on 2nd Street in the downtown area. Work is scheduled this coming Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. On Monday, the north lane and parking on the north side of 2nd St. will be closed throughout the day. Intersections will be closed on the north side of the street all day. Then on Tuesday, the south lane and parking on the south side of 2nd St. will be closed throughout the day. Intersections will be closed on the south side of the street all day. Motor vehicles and bicyclists will be detoured to adjacent side streets. While 2nd Street will remain open to traffic throughout the project, use of alternate routes is encouraged. Pedestrian and sidewalk access to downtown businesses will remain open through the duration of this work. No parking will be allowed within the daily work areas due to heavy equipment use. No parking signs will be placed on the curb 48 hours before the project moves into each work area.
Sheriff Says Wishram Navigation Beacon Shot Out
The Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office says a beacon near Wishram used for barge navigation has been shot out. A brief statement on social media indicated this has happened before. The Sheriff’s Office points out it not only costs thousands of taxpayer dollars to keep replacing the light, it is a safety issue for river traffic and could result in a felony charge for the person doing it. If you have seen or see anything suspicious in that area, you are asked to contact the Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office with any information you may have.
Stevenson Intermediate School Reopens Wednesday After Water Line Break
White Salmon Valley School District officials say the Wallace and Priscilla Stevenson Intermediate School should reopen for classes Wednesday. That after the facility had to remain closed Tuesday following a hot water line break sometime on Monday evening led to flooding in the building. District Interim Superintendent Jerry Lewis says the line broke under some concrete, and pumped water all over the floor of the facility. Lewis says they don’t yet know why the break occurred. He adds the water has been mopped up, and that will allow the school to reopen on Wednesday.
Spring Fest This Weekend In White Salmon
The White Salmon Spring Festival is set for this Friday and Saturday at Rheingarten Park. Two days of music and activities are planned, with the parade Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Parade organizer Amanda McDonald says this year’s grand marshal is the Washington Gorge Action Programs organization. Musical entertainment starts at 3 p.m. on Friday and continues through the weekend. There will also be a kids play zone, bouncy houses, a beer garden, and more. Cascade Avenue Clean-Up Effort Planned Saturday
The City of Hood River and SOLVE are organizing a clean-up effort this Saturday of West Cascade Avenue. City Manager Abigail Elder says they are taking volunteers to help in the work. Advance registration is required, go to cityofhoodriver.gov to link to the sign-up location. Volunteers 17 and under must be accompanied by an authorized adult. Most supplies will be provided, but volunteers are asked to bring reusable, preferably leather, gloves. The clean-up will run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Oregon Class 5A Track and Field
Hood River Valley’s Simone Tillman had a big weekend in Eugene, finishing second in the girls’ 400 meters, 3rd in the 200, and 5th in the long jump. Teammates Ximena Santillan finished fourth in the 300 meter hurdles and Sylvaine Farr tied for fourth in the pole vault. In the boys’ portion of the meet, HRV’s Elliott Hawley was fifth in the 1500 meters and eighth in the 3000, and Shaw Burns was eighth in the long jump.

Zoe Dunn of The Dalles was second in the girls’ triple jump, third in the long jump, and help the four by 400 meter relay team to a third place finish and the four by 100 meter relay team to a sixth place finish. The Riverhawks’ Madelyn Harrison was sixth in the 200 meters and Lilly Adams eighth in the 400. For The Dalles’ boys Juan Diego Contreras was fourth in the 1500 meters and seventh in the 3,000, and Julian Morehouse sixth in the pole vault.

Second place finishes from Trout Lake’s Gynel Duke in the girls’ pole vault and Myana Stock in the girls’ 1500 highlighted the Mid-Columbia effort of the final day of the meet. Trout Lake’s Landon Heberling was fourth in the boys’ 100 meters, and Sherman’s Sophie Hulke fourth in the girls’ shot put.
Washington Class 2B Track and Field
Stephen Pittman and Raymond Holycross led Goldendale’s boys to a third place finish in the team standings. Pittman had third place finishes in the pole vault, long jump, and 300 meter hurdles and finished seventh in the triple jump. Holycross won the triple jump, was fourth in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, and fifth in the long jump.

Columbia’s girls four by 100 meter relay team finished fourth, while the Bruins’ Jessica Polkinghorn was fifth in the girls’ shot put and Stevenson’s Hudson Holzhauer fifth in the boys’ discus.

Goldendale’s Jeslyn Berry and Taryn Rising won three out of four matches to finish third in girls’ doubles, while Gwen Gilliam won two out of four to take eighth in the singles, and the combined effort gave Goldendale the girls’ second place trophy behind Jenkins of Chewelah. The Timberwolves’ Eli Golding and Kyden Blunt split four matches to finish eighth in boys’ doubles.

Oregon Class 1A Track and Field Championships
State championships for Sawyer Dean of Trout Lake and Sophie Hulke of Sherman highlighted the Mid-Columbia effort on the first day of the state 1A meet in Eugene. Dean won the boys’ pole vault with a vault of 14 feet and 2 3/4 inches. Teammate Landon Heberling was fourth, and also took seventh in the high jump. Hulke was first in the girls’ discus with a toss of 113 feet, two inches. Dufur’s Hayley Peterson was seventh in the event. Sherman’s Morgan Geary was third in the girls’ javelin, Klickitat’s Austin Fink third and Sherman’s Henry Poirier eighth in the boys’ shot put, and Sherman’s Eduardo Rubio was sixth in the boys’ long jump. The Sherman girls are tied for second and Trout Lake boys third in the team standings after day one.
Washington Class 2B Track and Field Championships
Goldendale’s Raymond Holycross won the boys’ triple jump on the opening day of the meet in Richland. Holycross took first with a leap of 43 feet and 2 1/2 inches. Teammate Stephen Pittman was seventh.

Lyndon Christian 13, Columbia 0: Lynden Christian scored 11 runs in the sixth inning to pull away for the win. Teagen Blankenship and Ella Reed had two hits apiece for the Bruins.
Memorial Day Observances Planned
Memorial Day observances are planned throughout the region on Monday. Hood River’s American Legion Post 22 will hold its event at Idlewilde Cemetery from 11 to noon around the Walk of Honor, with a planned dedication of a Blue Star memorial marker honoring families of service members who have served overseas, and a Gold Star memorial marker honoring families of those service members who lost their lives in service to the country. The Dalles Memorial Day services will begin at noon at the Mult-Conflict Memorial site at Sorosis Park, with American Legion/VFW Auxiliary leader Vandee Mauser serving as master of ceremonies and joined by members of the Patriot Guard. American Legion Post 87 will host a service at the Klickitat County Cemetery in White Salmon Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. It is a service to honor fallen military and it is an induction service for recently deceased veterans being inducted to the cemetery’s Walk of Honor and honoring their families. And the City of Wasco will host a full day of events centered around Wasco Depot Park. A memorial service is set for 10 a.m., followed by a parade and car show at 11 a.m. and more events through the afternoon.
