TD Council Files Public Nuisance Action Against St. Vincent dePaul

The Dalles City Council voted to file a public nuisance action in Wasco County Circuit Court against St. Vincent dePaul Society of The Dalles.  Councilors took the action after an executive session, but did not elaborate on the reasons why other than Councilor Dan Richardson saying while seconding Tim McGlothlin’s motion that the move was to “remedy on-going quality of life impacts and public disorder.”  The move came after a large number of business and residential neighbors of the St. Vincent dePaul Community Meals location on West 3rd testified to councilors that something needed to be done about problems surrounding the facility ranging from public defecation and drug use to vandalism and more serious criminal activity.  Mayor Rich Mays noted after those comments that court decisions have limited what they can do in regards to homeless issues, adding they have had talks with St. Vincent dePaul for a year.  No one from St. Vincent dePaul spoke at the Council meeting.

Jantzen Beach Carousel Coming To The Dalles

The National Neon Sign Museum in The Dalles will be the new home of the Jantzen Beach Carousel.  The non-profit group Restore Oregon accepted a donation of the carousel from its former owners, and has been developing and testing repair and repainting protocols to guide future restoration, while also seeking a new home for the carousel.  The carousel’s wooden elements, including horses, panels, and decorative wooden elements, will be restored onsite in The National Neon Sign Museum’s new education center.  Visitors will have opportunities to watch artisans work on carousel horses in this space, and may also have opportunities to volunteer to assist with restoration efforts.  The carousel was installed at Jantzen Beach Amusement Park in June of 1928, and when the amusement park was torn down and replaced by the Jantzen Beach Center mall, the carousel was preserved as the sole surviving attraction from the park.  The carousel remained part of the mall until 2012, when it was disassembled and placed in storage.

HR Council Approves Final Reading Of Vehicle Ordinance

The Hood River City Council approved the final reading of an ordinance to limit the amount of time motor vehicles can be parked or stored in the public right of way.  It will limit the amount of time a vehicle can be parked on the street to one week, and require it to be moved at least two blocks.  After having lengthy discussions about the subject in previous meetings, the final passage occurred with almost no conversation.  Hood River Police Chief Neal Holste had told the Council officers needed something on the books to allow them to open discussions with people about the issue, noting complaints they receive about vehicles being left on the street without being moved for long periods of time in various neighborhoods in the community.
