HR Prevention Offers Opioid Overdose & Rescue Medication Training

The Hood River County Prevention and Health departments are offering a free 30-minute opioid overdose and rescue medication training to members of the community.  Along with the short training, all participants will receiving an opioid rescue kit containing gloves, rescue-breathing mask, alcohol wipes, and two doses of Naloxone.  Naloxone can quickly restore normal breathing and save the life of a person who is overdosing on opioids.  Training is offered in both English and Spanish by department staff.  For information, e-mail Daron Ryan at the Hood River County Health Department at daron.ryan@hoodrivercounty.gov or Belinda Ballah at belinda.ballah@hoodrivercounty.gov.

Grand Opening For The Annex On Thursday

Mid-Columbia Community Action Council will hold the grand opening of The Annex Transitional Housing and Shelter, formerly the Oregon Motor Motel at 200 West 2nd in The Dalles, on Thursday morning at 11 a.m.  The former 54-room motel has been fully renovated and converted to transitional housing and shelter for families, couples, and individuals in need of stability while they seek long-term permanent housing.  Community Action and its core partner organizations will provide 24/7 oversight and services on the Annex site, including housing case management, Veterans services, physical health, behavioral health, youth and family services, and Native and Latinx specific services.  The Annex will provide approximately 50 transitional housing and shelter units with around 75 beds. Community Action Executive Director Kenny LaPoint says The Annex highlights the first family specific shelter beds in the Mid-Columbia region, located in a separate building in The Annex’s west property.

Two Arrested In Recovery Of Stolen Goods In Cascade Locks

The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office announced it arrested two people last month in Cascade Locks that led to recovery of stolen goods from multiple thefts and car prowls.  The Sheriff’s Office issued a statement Monday saying the search was conducted at an address on Ruckel Street in Cascade Locks.  During the search, items connected to eight different reported thefts and car prowls were found.  Also seized were multiple firearms and a quantity of fentanyl pills.  Two people were arrested and lodged at NORCOR on multiple charges.  The investigation is ongoing.

HR County Gives Input On Wildfire Risk Maps

Hood River County received an opportunity recently to give the Oregon Department of Forestry some guidance on irrigated orchard lands that had not been recognized as such during work on wildfire risk maps.  County Administrator Jeff Hecksel says County Planner Eric Walker and GIS Coordinator Jake Edwards were able to use the county’s irrigation district maps and overlay them onto lands the state was assuming were high fire risk.  County Commission Chair Jennifer Euwer said the state was open to making the changes as it continues development of the map.

Another Month Before Port of TD Reviews Proposed Strategic Plan

The Port of The Dalles Commission will wait until next month to do a final review of its proposed strategic plan.  Port Executive Director Andrea Klaas says the board did receive a presentation from the consultants who have put it together.  She adds the consultants are making refinements to the plan after input from the Port board, noting this plan will reflect the Port not having the amount of land available that it used to.  Klaas added the plan will also reflect the Port’s goal of focusing on quality of jobs rather than simply quantity.

 

Catch Basin Cleaning Starts In The Dalles

Starting today and continuing for the next four weeks, The Dalles Public Works crews will be cleaning stormwater catch basins throughout the City.  Crews will begin on the east side of town working their way west over the next few weeks with expected completion by October 27.  Crews expect to clean catch basins in the Downtown Area the week of October 30.  Work will occur between 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. weekdays.  Public Works is asking cars be parked so that the catch basins are accessible during these hours.  Temporary traffic controls may be put in place during work on any given catch basin.  If you have questions, call The Dalles Public Works office at (541) 296-5401.      

Residential Tree Delivery Set For Saturday

The City of The Dalles Beautification & Tree Committee will be at Thompson Park on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. delivering trees to those who have been awarded through the Residential Tree Grant Program.  A total of 25 trees will be given to 17 residents who completed the application process and met the qualifications.  In addition, awardees will receive root barriers, if appropriate, and watering devices.  Along with the Beautification & Tree Committee members, volunteers will be in attendance to help give plating and care instructions.

The Dalles boys were second and the girls third at the Paul Mariman Invitational in Philomath.  Alana Casady finished third for the Riverhawks in the girls race, while Tyson Long was fourth for The Dalles in the boys’ race.

 

Lohrey Announces He Will Not Run In 2024

Long-time Sherman County Sheriff Brad Lohrey announced he will not seek re-election in 2024.  Lohrey released his decision with a letter he posted on the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, noting he had “mixed emotions” in choosing not to run.  Lohrey has been Sherman County Sheriff since 2001, and says in that time he has seen the community evolve, face challenges, and come together in ways he is extremely proud of.  He also said he was optimistic about Sherman County’s future and the next generation of leadership that will guide it.  Lohrey says he will continue to serve as Sheriff for the remainder of his term, which ends on December 31, 2024.
