Cracking found in a downstream gate of the navigation lock of The Dalles Dam during its annual inspection will require the Army Corps of Engineers to extend is closure to April 1. A planned, system-wide outage of all the locks on the Columbia and Snake rivers is scheduled to end March 21. Corps officials believe vibration, improper sealing and gate misalignment likely caused the damage. The Corps plans to update the status of the lock every Monday and Thursday until it is back in service. On an average day, around six commercial vessels pass through The Dalles Dam navigation lock.
