A Hood River County Sheriff’s Deputy has been arrested on a number of charges, including third degree sexual abuse. Hood River County Sheriff Matt English said in a statement that Deputy Marc Smith was arrested and lodged at NORCOR in The Dalles on Friday by the Oregon State Police, and charged with two counts of third degree sexual abuse, two counts of private indecency, one count of public indecency, and luring a minor. In his statement, English said he was notified of incident involving Smith and serious misconduct unrelated to the Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, and immediately placed him on administrative leave and asked the OSP to conduct an investigation. English said the charges against Smith are all related to off-duty conduct, but did not elaborate further due to the sensitive nature of the on-going investigation. The case has been referred to the Crook County District Attorney’s office for prosecution. He added making certain the Sheriff’s Office maintains the highest standards of conduct is paramount, and he’s committed to ensuring department employees are held to same standards at all citizens, but also noted the incident should not overshadow the hard work the professionals in the organization do every day. Smith was no longer listed on the NORCOR inmate roster as of Saturday morning.
