Group Advocating Local Planning For Aging Population

A group that originally got together for a book discussion is evolving into an organization to identify, discuss, and advocate for the needs of the growing numbers of elders and caregivers in the region.  Dr. Tina Castanares says the Aging in the Gorge Alliance has continued to grow in numbers, and seeks to help develop age-friendly communities, following a model developed by the World Health Organization that includes domains ranging from housing and health care to employment opportunities and social involvement.  Population projections show that by 2030, 25 percent of Wasco County residents and over 20 percent in Hood River County will be over the age of 65.
