White Salmon Valley School District is moving ahead with plans to shift fourth graders to Henkle Middle School next year to deal with capacity issues at Whitson Elementary School due to increasing enrollment. Henkle will be divided into two wings for next school year, one for fourth through sixth grades and another for seventh and eighth graders. Superintendent Jerry Lewis says this provides a short-term answer…but continued enrollment jumps require long-term planning. A survey will be done next year with the help of the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Southwest Washington ESD. Lewis did say if Henkle reached capacity…the building could be expanded as an intermediate step.
