The Dalles has made Smithsonian Magazine’s list of the America’s Best Small Towns to Visit. The magazine says it has singled out 20 communities for particular strengths in history, music, visual arts, learning, food, theater, and science. It used the geographical information systems company Ersi to analyze data to find towns or cities with fewer than 15,000 residents where cultural opportunities abound. The Dalles was cited for the natural beauty that surrounds it, number of historic sites, and proximity to Multnomah Falls and the Tom McCall Preserve at Rowena. Chautauqua, New York topped the Smithsonian small town list.
