Quick Action By Hotel Worker Leads To Rescue Of Kidnapping Victim

Hood River Police say the quick actions of a Hood River Best Western employee allowed officers to rescue a kidnapping victim from Trout Lake and arrest the suspect.  According to a statement by the Hood River Police Department, officers were sent to the Hood River Best Western on Tuesday evening on a report of a possible kidnapping.  An employee had called the police to report suspicious activity between a man and a woman.  Responding officers located the pair and found the woman to be visibly distressed, and after an investigation they learned the 36-year-old woman had been taken by force from a Trout Lake residence.  Police say 32-year-old Logan Olmstead of Hood River was booked and lodged at NORCOR on charges of kidnapping, menacing, reckless endangering, coercion, and interfering with making a report.

 

DNR Preliminary Report Finds Human/Railroad Ops Likely Tunnel 5 Fire Cause

The Washington Department of Natural Resources has released a preliminary report indicating the cause of the Tunnel 5 Fire near Underwood in early July was most likely human and railroad operations related.  The preliminary findings of the cause of the fire is based on scene observations, witness statements, first responder accounts, and evidence collected on-scene.  Burlington Northern-Santa Fe was listed as the train company responsible for emitting “some object(s) which started fire” in three areas over a distance of approximately 690 feet.  The DNR report says with these emissions from the train, paired with dry vegetation and west winds, the Tunnel 5 fire began, burning over 500 acres and numerous homes in Eastern Skamania County.  The report from Department of Natural Resources is preliminary and the investigation is still on-going.

California Man Dies In I-84 Motorcycle Accident

A California man died in a Thursday evening motorcycle accident on Interstate 84 in Gilliam County.  According to the Oregon State Police, a preliminary investigation indicated a motorcycle operated by 60-year-old Scott Bastin of Simi Valley, California was westbound on I-84 near milepost 134 at around 6:40 Thursday evening when he traveled out of the lane of travel and onto the inside gravel median for unknown reasons.  The motorcycle continued several hundred feet down the median and struck the cable divider.  The OSP says Bastin was pronounced deceased at the scene.

WDFW Biologist Dies In Wind River

A 31-year-old Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife biologist drowned in the Wind River north of Carson on Wednesday.  According to the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office, emergency dispatchers received a report of a woman entrapped in the Wind River.  In spite of efforts from numerous search and rescue personnel the woman, who was conducting a summer steelhead survey for the Fish and Wildlife Department, was recovered deceased.  Skamania County Sheriff Summer Scheyer says a full investigation of the incident was conducted, and it was found to be a “tragic accident.”

Fire South Of Dufur Burns Four Acres

A fire south of Dufur on Tuesday afternoon burned about four acres and forced Level 3 evacuations for a time before its forward progress was stopped.  The Wasco County Sheriff’s Office says the fire was first reported around 3:10 p.m. in the area between upper Fivemile Rd., Valley Dr., and Ridgetop Rd.  Fire bosses were brought in to provide aerial support to crews from Dufur, Wamic, Tygh Valley, and the Central Oregon District of the Oregon Department of Forestry.  Forward progress was stopped around 5 p.m., with one structure lost.  Level 3 “Go Now” evacuations were issued for all of Sportsman’s Paradise, Upper Fifteen Mile Rd to Dufur Valley Rd and all of Ridgetop Rd, but that was reduced to Level 2 by the early evening.  There is no cause of the fire at this time.

Updated COVID Vaccines Coming Soon

State officials say updated COVID-19 vaccines could be available in Oregon as soon as next week.  The Moderna and Pfizer boosters were recommended for use on Tuesday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization practices.  Daron Ryan at the Hood River County Health Department says the new vaccines were designed to target the XBB.1.5 subvariant, but they should be effective against newer strains as well.  Ryan adds flu vaccines are available at this time.

Get Ready The Dalles Preparedness Fair On Saturday

The annual Get Ready The Dalles emergency preparedness fair is scheduled for this Saturday.  Tonya Brumley of NW Natural says they have 28 different agencies lined up to attend and provide tips on how to be ready for any kind of emergency.  OSU Extension and the Columbia Gorge Food Bank will help people learn how to prepare foods for an emergency, and NW Natural will providing “Go Bags” to help people get started preparing an emergency kit.  Saturday’s event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mid-Columbia Fire & Rescue on 1400 West 8th in The Dalles.

 

Camp Creek Fire At 44% Containment

Containment of the Camp Creek Fire on the Mount National Forest near the Bull Run Watershed remains at 44%.  Size of the fire is now listed at 2,032 acres, up slightly from Tuesday.  Pacific Northwest Team 3 operations section chief Nathan Goodrich says they continue to make good progress firming up lines at the northern end of the fire.  It’s the south end where it remains difficult to locate where direct lines can be established.  Goodrich added that lines to the western portion of the fire are well established.

Stevenson and Columbia finished 1-2 in the girls’ standings at a Trico League meet in Castle Rock.  CHS’ Lilah Zimmerman finished second, while Stevenson’s Daisy Jones was fourth.  In the boys’ race, August Lorincz of  Columbia was 14th, and Raymond Hays of Stevenson was 24th.
