The ribbon cutting for the new Columbia Gorge Food Bank facility that will help supply seventeen different food pantries in Wasco, Sherman, and Hood River counties took place on Tuesday.  Sharon Thornberry of the Oregon Food Bank says the new warehouse will allow them to have more flexibility in what they can provide in the Gorge, particularly fresh and perishable foods.  Thornberry adds the new warehouse will also be able to maintain a supply of food and water in the event of a disaster.  The warehouse is located at 3610 Crates Way in the Port of The Dalles.

Henderson Stadium Track/Turf Project Expected To Start In May

The project to install a new field-turf surface and track at Hood River Valley High School’s Henderson Stadium will now start in May.  Hood River County School District Superintendent Dan Goldman says they considered April, but decided to wait a month to lessen the disruption on high school track program practices.  The goal is to have a grand opening at the school’s Homecoming next fall.  The installation schedule means a new site will have to be found for Hood River Valley High School’s graduation ceremony in June.  Goldman says high school administration is involving students in considering where to move that event.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office says a Stevenson man is in custody after a fatal shooting Sunday morning.  According to a written statement, 24-year-old William F. Prosser has been booked into the Skamania County Jail on suspicion of murder.  The Sheriff’s Office says it received a report of a shooting in the 1500 block of Lakeview Drive in Stevenson on Sunday at about 8:35 a.m., and on arrival found 37-year-old Michael McLaughlin of Tigard deceased outside a residence.  An initial Sheriff’s investigation revealed Prosser, McLaughlin, and three others had been at the Bagby Hot Springs in the Mt Hood National Forest and afterward had driven to Stevenson.  It was shortly after their arrival a verbal dispute occurred between Prosser and McLaughlin, ending with McLaughlin sustaining fatal gunshot wounds.  McLaughlin’s body was taken to the Clark County Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy that was scheduled for Monday.

Port of HR To Show New Breeze-By Account System

The Port of Hood River staff will show Port Commissioners the new account management system for the Port’s Breeze-By electronic toll system for the Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Bridge at the panel’s meeting on Tuesday evening.  Port Executive Director Michael McElwee says a soft launch is underway and it is operating.  If the account management system is ready, then toll increases will go into effect on February 1.  The tolls will go from 80 cents to one dollar for Breeze-by users, and one dollar to two dollars for cash tolls.  In approving the toll increases Port Commissioners decided the account management system needed to be up and running for six weeks before the rate hikes go into effect.  Tuesday’s Port board meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Port’s Marina Center boardroom.

Holiday Business In The Dalles Appears Brisk

Business in The Dalles this holiday season appears to fairly brisk.  The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Lisa Farquharson doesn’t have any hard data at this point, but says this year’s holiday retail season is being helped by better weather than last year, and parking over the weekend was scarce.  Farquharson says this is an important season for retail businesses, particularly after losing a big part of September revenue due to the impacts of the Eagle Creek Fire.

Judge Denies Motion To Dismiss NORCOR Suit

A judge has denied motions made by the Northern Oregon Corrections Facility to dismiss a lawsuit by four citizens claiming NORCOR is violating state law by allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees to be held there, but did remove Wasco County as a defendant in the lawsuit.  A spokesperson in NORCOR attorney Will Carey’s office said they received the ruling from Wasco County Circuit Judge John Wolf Friday.  Plaintiffs claim the sanctuary law passed by the Oregon Legislature in 1987 prohibits state resources from being used to apprehend and detect people in the country illegal.  During Thursday’s NORCOR board meeting, Carey explained the motion he filed was based on interpretation of that statute, saying the detainees are housed by contract with the Federal Marshal’s office, and they don’t detect or apprehend any of them.  Carey’s spokesperson said today they “remain optimistic” about the eventual outcome of the case.
