Skamania County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded on Thursday to the second threat of a school shooting at Wind River Middle School in less than a week. The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office says at approximately 10:50 Thursday morning, school officials reported the incident to the Sheriff’s Office. Wind River Middle School was placed in lockdown and students were sequestered to the school’s gymnasium. Video surveillance was reviewed and several students were interviewed by detectives. The Sheriff’s Office said late Thursday the person responsible for making the threat has not been determined and the investigation is active. Two Arrested In Coastal Theft
Two people were arrested on Wednesday in Washington after a report of theft and burglary at Coastal Farm and Ranch in The Dalles. According to the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office, Wasco County Sheriff’s deputies and Oregon State Police attempted to stop a vehicle near The Dalles after the theft was reported, but the suspect vehicle crossed the Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Bridge. The vehicle was located abandoned in White Salmon. A passenger, identified as 33-year-old William Forbes of Carson was taken into custody in White Salmon while the driver, identified as 29-year-old Elizabeth Purkeypyle of Carson was arrested at a residence in Carson. Both suspects were lodged in the Klickitat County Correctional Facility.

Fire Burns Apartment In The Dalles
A fire Tuesday afternoon burned an apartment at Cherry Blossom Apartments in The Dalles. According to Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue, crews arrived at the scene just after 5:20 p.m. to find black smoke coming from a room in a first story apartment. The Dalles Police evacuated the apartments and firefighters were able to quickly suppress the fire, keeping it from spreading to other apartments. The occupant of the apartment was evaluated by paramedics on scene, and then released. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Dallesport-Murdock firefighters also responded to the location.
Work Underway On Family Man Improvements
Work continues on improvements to the Family Man trail site off of Riordan Hill Road on Hood River County Forestland. Hood River Area Trail Stewards Tim Mixon says timber thinning and cleanup was done over the winter, and now work has started on the improvements to create a beginner to intermediate rider skills area. Excavators are also in use to rebuild trails at the location. Features will continue to be built through the summer, and the County is seeking a Oregon State Parks grant to allow construction in the fall of some adaptive trails, a rock garden, two more bathrooms, more parking, and additional infrastructure.
Bridge Replacement Project Launches Website
The Hood River-White Salmon Bridge Replacement Project has launched its new website at hoodriverbridge.org. The new site will provide information about the project to the community, and is a collaboration between the Port of Hood River, the Bistate Working Group and the project team. The website features information about the current bridge’s limitations, benefits of the new bridge design, and updates on the project’s progress. The website also includes information about the Bistate Working Group and will serve as the site for the new bistate agency, the Hood River-White Salmon Bridge Authority, which is expected to form in the summer of 2023. In addition to the website, the project has launched new social media accounts on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. The Port of Hood River’s existing website will continue to provide information about the current bridge, including toll rates, BreezeBy information, traffic alerts, and other important announcements.

Homicide Investigation Continues
Detectives from the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office, the Wasco County District Attorney’s Office, and the Wasco County Major Crimes Team continues to actively investigate the homicide of a woman in the Cherry Heights area on March 17. District Attorney Matthew Ellis said in a statement that at this point in the investigation, no arrests have been made in connection with the death of Amanda Harman. Ellis added limited information has been released to avoid compromising the integrity of the investigation. He said detectives are actively processing evidence and following up on tips. Anyone with information directly related to the case are asked to reach out to law enforcement. Tips can be submitted in one of three ways. Wind River Locked Down Monday Due To Threat
The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office says Wind River Middle School was placed in lockdown Monday morning after it was notified of a threat of a school shooting there. The Sheriff’s Office says the lockdown decision was made based on the nature and specificity of the threat. Students were held at neighboring Carson Elementary School while law enforcement personnel determined it was safe for students to return to Wind River. Students and their belongings were checked for dangerous weapons. The Sheriff’s Office says they have not yet determined the person responsible for making the threat and the investigation is active. Budget Preparations Begin For City Of The Dalles
The City of The Dalles is in the midst of preparing a budget for the 2023-24 Fiscal Year. Municipal staff will have a fiscal document for the City Budget Committee to consider in May. The Dalles Mayor Rich Mays says the City is in very good shape financially, but he adds that new City Manager Matthew Klebes feels they also have needs to be addressed, including economic development and facilities maintenance. Mays says they have a healthy balance in the general fund at this time.
