Hood River County DA Says Additional Staff Needed

With an increase in DUII cases increasing the workload for the Hood River County District Attorney’s Office, D.A. Carrie Rasmussen is advocating for adding staff.  Rasmussen says they desperately need a discovery clerk, something she adds most counties have to get body camera coverage to defense attorneys in a timely manner.  In addition. Rasmussen says her office needs a new prosecutor’s position and more support in victims’ assistance.  Hood River County’s District Attorney’s office currently employs two deputy district attorneys and four staff members.  By comparison, Wasco County has three deputy D.A.’s and seven other staffers.

Erik Anderson at erika@klickitatcounty.org.

Wonderworks Looking For Donations To Cover Operational Costs

Wonderworks Children’s Museum of the Gorge is seeking about $40,000 in donations to be able to reopen its doors to the public.  Wonderworks Board Vice-Chair Nichole Biechler says they need to develop a cushion that would cover operational costs for a partial year.  The facility is located at 206 Madison in The Dalles.  It is still available for birthday parties.  Donations are being accepted at wonderworksgorge.org.

Canby Man Arraigned In Wasco County On Sex Abuse Charges

A Canby man has been arraigned in Wasco County on two counts of first degree sex abuse.  Wasco County District Attorney Matthew Ellis say 41-year-old Sean Boyd is accused of fondling a 13-year-old girl last month.  Ellis says Boyd has worked as a youth athletic coach in the greater Canby area.  He adds both the school district and the youth sports program has been notified of the charges and the indictment against Boyd.  The Wasco County Grand Jury indicted Boyd on August 30.  Ellis says it is believed that there could possibly be other victims.   The District Attorney’s Office is particularly concerned about young teenage or preteen girls with whom Boyd has had extensive contact through family or sports activities.  If the public has information about Boyd or about other possible victims, contact Det. Jeff Hall at the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office at 541-506-2580 or email sheriff@co.wasco.or.us.

No Tobacco/Vaping Signs Up In Lewis & Clark Festival Park

New signage recently installed at Lewis & Clark Festival Park in The Dalles alerts the public to the park’s new status as a tobacco- and vape-free facility.  In all, five signs are placed throughout the park, including two larger ones at the entrance and on the building there, and three smaller ones throughout the park.  The Dalles City Council in May passed an ordinance carrying a $100 fine for smoking or vaping in the park.   Officials expect most people will comply with the new rule, but if police are called because someone is smoking or vaping, officers are expected to provide education on the ordinance first, and only issue a ticket as a last resort.  The new ordinance brings the city’s park in line with the nine other smoke-free parks within The Dalles that are run by the North Wasco County Parks & Recreation District.  The signs were paid for by the city and the North Central Public Health District.

Klickitat County Lifting Burn Bans On Monday

Klickitat County Commissioners are lifting burn bans throughout the County as of this coming Monday.  Commissioners made the move on Tuesday thanks to current and forecast weather conditions throughout Klickitat County.  The burn bans for all three of the zones used to make those declarations will no longer be in effect as of Monday.  The public is directed to check with the appropriate authorities concerning burning restrictions within the corporate limits of any city or town.  For clarity the zone boundaries follow fire district boundaries as much as possible.  Maps detailing the zone boundaries are available to view and download on the Klickitat County Department of Emergency Management webpage.
