A City of The Dalles police officer has received a letter of commendation for his efforts to rescue a woman who had jumped from The Dalles Bridge. According to a statement by The Dalles Police Department posted on their Facebook page, Officer Kris Wood located the woman late on the night of April 15 about 20 feet from the bank of the Columbia River sitting on a rock shelf, distraught and in danger of hypothermia. Wood waded out into the river and safely brought the woman back to the shore by carrying her over his shoulder. The statement says the woman’s body temperature was extremely low when she was taken to Mid-Columbia Medical Center, and permanent damage or death could have easily occurred with the further passage of time.
