HR County Talking Public Safety Funding

Hood River County Commissioners discussed the timing and methodology to boost funding to cover the cost of public safety.  Commissioners talked about whether a district using property taxes or a sales tax could be used to deal with an ever-tightening budget for law enforcement.  County Administrator David Meriwether, Finance Director Sandy Borowy, and Sheriff Matt English outlined some options for Commissioners.  Meriwether says how much the County spends on public safety depends on what departments are actually considered, but he estimates it at around $4,000,000.   He added no one believes it is realistic to ask County voters to approve a funding model for that amount, with a figure of around $1,500,000 more realistic.  Meriwether says they hope to develop a plan for future public safety funding within the next 12 to 18 months.
